Section 2-4: Putting it all together

Wow, that was a lot of work! You have learned about the VAK Theory (Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic), the Hemispheric Dominance Theory (two sides of the brain), and the Experiential Learning Model (the four ways of interacting with learning).  You've taken a number of quizzes to discover your own learning styles related to each of these models.

The main point of all of these exercises is self-awareness. The better you know and understand yourself, the better you can manage your learning. The better you know and understand yourself, the more efficiently you can study.

The second most important reason to learn this information is to better understand your classmates, coworkers, colleagues and even your teacher. We all have dominant learning styles in each of the ways discussed by the theories. They affect how we do what we do. They affect how we interact with others on projects, and they even affect how your teacher teaches. Understand and recognize learning styles in others and you will be able to predict more behavior, work more efficiently with them and be more successful in your interactions.

You can use this information right now when you plan your study sessions or choose from response options in class.

If you know you're a kinesthetic learner, pick a study option that involves movement, like playing a game with flash cards.  If you know you're an auditory learner, try reading the text out loud and recording yourself so you can listen later.

If your left brain is dominant, find all of the details about your topic and put them together to make that research paper.  If your right brain is dominant, try to see the big picture first and then go back to find out the details.

If you know you like to learn in a hands-on style, ask to help tutor other students.  Teaching is often a great way to learn!

Information about learning will help me understand and others more completely.  I can use this information to choose the best ways to , the most efficient for material, and how to tackle difficult learning tasks.  I can also use this information to help myself better the people I work with.  My , committee members, coworkers, team members, supervisors and all have learning styles just like else.  Their learning styles affect what they say and and how they go about getting done.  It is to recognize those styles and how I interact with the people.  That will help me be more successful in everything I do.  I am empowered by this !
