Sight words are the common, every day words that seem very easy until you start considering how often they break common phonics rules. These words, which defy easy ’sounding out’ are often among the first that we teach to children. Who can begin to make sense of words like “gone” and “none” when they’ve just learned that e’s on the ends of words make the vowels say their names? There’s no rhyme or reason, and the sight words simply need to be memorized.
