All Info About Reading

If you work with adult or older teen struggling readers, you will want to check out this publisher.  It can be tough to find age-appropriate activities and worksheets to use with adults, but Remedia is a great resource. 

I use their Sight Words for Older Students and Word Families for Older Students reproducible workbooks with my adults and teens, and they’re really wonderful.  You can target specific sight words or particular word families to match and support other curricula that you may be using, or you can start at the beginning and work your way through the book. 

The workbook sheets are well laid out, with a reasonable number of items on each page, so as not to be overwhelming to students with special needs.  They present a variety of activities, but there is a good amount of consistency (word boxes, sentences with missing words, scrambled sentences, simple crossword puzzles, and so forth) so that students can master the presentation instead of having to figure out how to complete each page anew.  The illustrations are neutral, not too juvenile to use with adults. 

My one complaint about the content is that some of the sentences presented are a bit young for use with adults.  They talk about toys, boys and girls, and so forth, and some adults find this to be distasteful. 

All in all, Remedia offers good resources to teachers and tutors who work with older remedial reading students.  You can find their publications at your favorite educational supply store, or you can visit their website at Remedia Publications.
