Newspaper Activities
February 25th, 2008 by admin
Few resources for reading are as common and inexpensive as your newspaper. Nearly everyone has access and the newspapers don’t even have to be current. Any issue will do. And there are things you can do with every age group and every level.
For Preschoolers:
Cut out large letters from headlines and make a letter collage. Paste the letters in alphabetical order. Cut out words that begin or end with a target letter.
For Emergent Readers:
Use a highlighter to mark words that are known. Cut out headline letters and glue in place to spell familiar words.
For Young Readers (Grades 2-3):
Cut out a comic with panels and separate them. Challenge the reader to put the panels back into the right order. Collect rhyming words from all over the newspaper.
For Older Students (Grades 4 and up):
Read an article and answer the questions who, what, when, where, and why. Cut out articles with headlines and separate them. Challenge the reader to match headline with article. Read an article and make up a headline. Read a headline and make up an article.
Phonics Fun:
Find words with specific phonics attributes, such as starting with D or ending with T. Look for short vowels, silent letters, and digraphs. Make a list of words with suffixes and give the root word for each.
Vocabulary Activities:
Look through the newspaper and find words that are unknown. Use a dictionary to discover their meaning. Find words with two or more meanings and tell which meaning applies.
This list will surely set your brain into motion. If you come up with a fantastic and fun newspaper activity to build reading skills, send it on in! I’ll publish the best of them and give you a link to your website if you wish.
