Book Review: Reading Reflex

February 26th, 2008 by admin

Homeschoolers and parents of young readers alike will be pleased with this book.  It’s full of information about the process of learning to read, the normal course of development, basic and advanced lessons and lots of activity ideas to support those lessons.  Reading Reflex provides a complete methodology for moving from little or no reading skill to a solid understanding of how sounds work together to make words.

Briefly, the methodology explained in Reading Reflex is the Phono-Graphix method.  A bridge to the written word is created through the use of what they call “sound-pictures.”  The first concepts taught include a visual cue as well as the usual spellings of words, such as t and h spaced closely together with other sounds more spread out, or long vowels underlined.  The idea is that students will have an easier time seeing and remembering the patterns with these extra cues, which are then gradually phased out.

The book begins with a detailed explanation of how the program works and the research that supports it.  There is a simple and easily-implemented assessment to gauge your student’s current reading level and readiness for the material likely to be presented in the coming months at school.  It offers detailed lesson plans that will guide a parent or tutor in a step-by-step fashion through the concepts to be presented, as well as numerous activities, controlled vocabulary reading materials and other supporting supplies.

This book is particularly valuable for students who don’t seem to be responding well to traditional phonics instruction in school.  It offers a blend of phonics with extra visual cues that may be just what your child needs for success.

The Reading-Writing Connection

February 26th, 2008 by admin

The magic of language experiences is that they use the children’s own language to help them learn to read.  Beginning learners tell stories of interest to them.  They can be real or fictional; it makes no difference.  A willing partner who is a good writer takes down their words exactly (grammatical missteps and all).  The piece is printed up in large letters or typed clearly, and the story-teller discovers that he or she can actually “read” this piece.  It’s an amazing moment of discovery, and is particularly effective for struggling or inexperienced readers.

From there, language learning can truly take off.  Student pieces can be used for lessons on phonic analysis and word attack, vocabulary exercises, and every other aspect of reading.  Writing lessons branch off from the reading lessons, and this new writing is fodder for new reading lessons.  The method takes full advantage of the connection between spoken and written language, and can be used effectively with learners of all ages and abilities.
